The Nuts and Bolts of Advocacy

Here are some helpful tips for new and seasoned activists.

CLEAN

So you're fired up and ready to make some calls, write some letters, and send some tweets. What now? How the heck do you figure out what's going on in Colorado that needs your attention? CLEAN stands for Citizen Legislative Early Action Network. It was designed to provide everyday citizens like you with up to date information on upcoming bills in the Colorado House and Senate. Click here for more information and to join their electronic mailing list. Please note: clean is run out of the Longmont Dems, but it is designed for all Colorodans.

Sample Scripts

When you pick up the phone to call your representatives there are a few things you should say 1) who you are, 2) that you are constituent, 3) where you live, and 4) why you are calling. Below are some sample scripts. Remember, these scrips are just ideas. It is always better to speak from the heart rather than sound like you are reading a script. The more often you call, the more comfortable you will get making these types of calls.

BLM Methane Waste Rule

Hi, I'm Amy Activist. I'm a constituent of Senator Gardner's and I live in Denver. My zip is 80299. I'm calling to urge Senator Gardner to vote NO on repealing the BLM Methane Waste Rule. The BLM rule simply makes straightforward financial and economic sense, and it also helps to reduce risks by lessening climate warming pollution, smog and toxic carcinogens like benzene. Senator Gardner has an important choice in front of him. One is to preserve, protect and defend the nation’s treasured natural resources. The other is to vote for more waste and pollution – most of which is avoidable. I hope I can count on him voting NO on this.

Oppose 45's new Budget Proposal

Hi I'm Adam Activist and I live in Louisville zip 80027. I'm a constituent of Senator Gardner's. I'm calling today to express my deep concern over the president's proposed budget. Specifically, (choose one or two that concern you the most and share a personal story related to it):

  • I don't want my tax dollars paying for his wall or a bigger military.
  • I support national parks, the prevention of wildlife trafficking, and superfund pollution cleanup.
  • I support scientific research on the climate crisis and cancer.
  • I support the EnergyStar program that rates appliances' efficiency.
  • I support programs like WIC, school meals, housing subsidies, and medical care for people in need.
  • I support the arts and humanities, including quality programming like Sesame Street, NPR, and Public Broadcasting.

Honestly, it’s not just the budget, it’s the belief that my tax dollars should support people in need and programs for the public good. Where does Senator Gardner stand on this proposed budget?

National Popular Vote Bill

Are you as ticked off by the Electoral College as we are? Do you believe the winner of the national popular vote in all 50 states and the district of Columbia should be guaranteed the presidency? Check out the National Popular Vote Bill. Democratic Senator Andy Kerr, D-Lakewood, says legislation is in the works that would allow Colorado to join an interstate popular-vote compact. If this passes in Colorado, we would agree to award our electoral votes to the candidate who wins the national popular vote. The policy would only go into effect if enough other states pass similar legislation to achieve a majority of the Electoral College. At least ten states already have this type of law on the books and more states are voting on it every month.

If this sounds like a good idea to you contact your state Senator and Representative and tell them to support this bill when it comes through the legislature! Update: Unfortunately this bill just passed in the House but was killed in the Republican controlled Senate. Let's gear up to get this sucker passed next year!

Get involved with the Democratic Party Locally

If you are a registered Democrat, consider getting involved at the county level. There are active groups throughout Colorado. These groups are focused on getting Democrats elected throughout your county, which is incredibly important. Click on your county to link to your local group: Boulder, Longmont, Larimer County, Denver, El Paso County.  Don't see your county listed? Google them. Sign up for electronic newsletters put out by your county so you know whats going on.
